Last Tuesday I shared where I shop for my capsule wardrobe! (Post linked here) I wanted to dive in a bit deeper this week and give a specific example of how I purchase items that will fit perfectly in my closet. Since I created my capsule wardrobe, it has been SO easy to create outfits as well as shop. I have also saved SO much time!

Read my previous capsule Wardrobe posts:
step 1: decide what event you are shopping for
The first step to adding clothes to your spring wardrobe is deciding exactly WHAT you are shopping for! Whether it is a trip, date nights, or just a variety of items for the new season, it is important to know your purpose when you are shopping so you don’t end up buying random things you’ll never wear! For me, I decided I just wanted to freshen up my Spring wardrobe in general. I wanted to add a few new pieces that would match perfectly with that I already have.
Step 2: identify staple pieces in your spring wardrobe
Here are some of my Spring capsule wardrobe essentials:
- Dark wash skinny jeans
- Tory Burch miller sandals
- Nude heeled sandals
- White tops
- Pink statement earrings
- Floral Dresses
- Swimsuits/cover-ups
- Denim shorts
Step 3: Create a list of items you need
Once I identify my staple pieces, I create a list of items I know would match perfectly with what I already have in my closet. Here is the list I came up with:
- Pink sandals (I have one pair of somewhat heavy pink wedges, but wanted something a little lighter I would get more use out of)
- Special occasion dresses (since moving to the city, Ryan and I plan on trying out some new restaurants since there are SO many down here. I also could use a few new dresses for brunch with friends, birthdays coming up, etc! I feel like I always wear the same thing and could spice up my dress collection.)
- Swimwear/cover-ups (my mom lives in FL and I try to visit her every season. With Spring near by I know it will be warm enough to go to the pool very soon and I could use another cover-up)
- White tops (white tops are a favorite of mine, especially for Spring. I realized I only have two, and am wearing them constantly so I could use another!)
step 4: pick a store
I shared how I identify brands and stores I shop at in my latest Capsule Wardrobe post here. Once I decide what exactly I am shopping for, I try to think of places that may have everything I need. With Spring coming up, I decided to freshen up my Spring Capsule Wardrobe with a few new items from Red Dress Boutique since they have a huge variety of items that align with my girly style.
step 5: purchase your items
This is the fun part! Once you have decided on a store, use your two lists to add items to your cart. Here is everything I ordered from Red Dress:

Floral print maxi dress
I figured I could wear this dress throughout Spring and Summer. I plan on wearing it for a nice brunch or dinner in the city, and will for sure be taking this on my honeymoon over the summer! It is a little long on me so I added a pair of shorter nude colored heeled sandals and now the height is perfect.
Nude colored cocktail dress
pink party dress
This is another cute event dress! It would be perfect to celebrate a birthday (mine is coming in the Spring!) Also looks great with the same shoes I have already.
White top
Since white tops are such a staple to my wardrobe, but I always wear the same ones, I knew I needed at least one more. This blouse is perfect because it has quarter-length sleeves so it can be worn when it is still chilly outside and also once it gets warmer. I will probably be wearing this with both full length jeans and denim shorts.
pink sandals
I put pink sandals on my list of items to buy this season. The braided sandal look is super trendy right now, and I thought adding a pop of pink would help elevate a simple outfit. I knew I would be able to wear them with my pink dresses as well as jeans and a white top. I found this pair to run true to size and they are actually very comfortable and easy to walk in!
White cover-up dress
I have 3 cover ups in my wardrobe and only one of them is white. Last year I almost exclusively wore my one white cover up because it matched most of my bathing suits. I have a few colorful ones and I found it more difficult to pair with the swimsuits I had in my closet. With my trips to FL and honeymoon coming up, plus the fact that my apartment has a pool, I know I will be spending a lot of time by the water this season. Cover-ups are a must in my Spring wardrobe and I thought I would get a lot of use out of a second white cover up. I like this one because it has an adjustable tie at the waist.
