How I Keep My Fake Blonde Hair Blonde // Purple Shampoo Review

In case you didn’t know, I’m a fake blonde! I will be doing a more elaborate post about how I keep my dyed hair healthy but in the meantime I wanted to share what I get questions about a lot – how I keep my dyed hair blonde and how I keep it from turning yellow!

Before & After

Just for reference, here are some photos of my most natural hair color I could find (I got highlights on the left and used sun-in on the right – would NOT recommend!)

So as you can see, my hair is pretty dark! for the past couple years I haven been going to a stylist regularly (about every 7 weeks) to get highlights. Usually I get full highlights every other appointment and partial highlights in between. She also does something she calls a “base bump” which really brightens the root. I love how my hair always turns out!

Now Onto the Shampoo!

Incase you haven’t heard of purple shampoo…

Imagine a color wheel – purple is on the opposite side of yellow. So to make sure your blonde hair doesn’t turn yellow, you can use a purple shampoo. I also have naturally oily hair and have included info about how each shampoo affects my hair, and what I would recommend for each hair type.

I have organized them based on my favorite to least favorite!

AG Hair Care Silver Shampoo

Pros/cons: works great for oily hair! Ulta occasionally does discounts. I bought my bottles for $15 each! I think this works the best when it comes to keeping my hair blonde compared to the rest but it does dry my hair out so maybe only use if you have oily hair and a great conditioner. I linked the one I use HERE.

Price: $58 for 34oz but Ulta does discounts!!

Lush Daddy-O Purple Shampoo

Pros/cons: Makes hair smell good, keeps hair clean and soft, not animal tested. It is only sold at Lush, which does not offer discounts, and it has sulfates. I did notice my hair to start to turn pink when I was using this every 1-2 days, so I would recommend using less often like once per week.

Price: $34 for 17z

Daddy-O

Clairol Shimmer Lights

Pros/cons: I liked this until I started using AG haircare. When I tried to switch back to Shimmer Lights, I noticed my hair got oily faster. I would maybe recommend this if your hair is normal to dry. One perk is the price!

Price: $20 for 30oz

Shimmer Lights Shampoo 31.5 oz

Loreal EverPure Blonde Shampoo

Pros/cons: The biggest plus about this shampoo is the price. However, I was somewhat disappointed when I opened it because it is barely purple. It is more creamy, which I have found never works for my oily hair. I actually think this made my hair more yellow but I did only use this once so I don’t know how much I should say about it. Maybe only try if your hair is more on the dry side. Also doesn’t have sulfates, which is a plus.

price: $8 for 8oz

L'Oréal EverPure Blonde Shampoo

Toner

I have to also mention this toner I have been using – if you don’t know what toner is, it is similar to the purple shampoo in that it brightens blonde while decreasing yellow tones but is more potent. I use this 1-2x per week and leave in for 10-15 minutes and it helps tremendously! It also doubles as a hair mask and makes your hair super soft!
